Volunteer handing ration packets to a family in a rural village

Rural West Bengal

Hunger is a crisis that leaves millions of West Bengal families behind every single day.

We are a small team in West Bengal — friends and neighbours from Kolkata and nearby districts — who pool our own money, buy ration items in bulk, and deliver food kits directly to poor families in villages across South 24 Parganas, Nadia, and Murshidabad.

The Problem

The challenge is not a lack of food — it is making ration reach the poorest families in West Bengal's villages, consistently and with dignity.

19.4 Crore

People in West Bengal go to bed hungry every night — many in the villages we serve firsthand.

Every 10 sec

A child dies from hunger-related causes somewhere in the world — many in our own villages.

68%

Of rural families in West Bengal cannot afford a nutritious meal every day, despite food being available.

1 in 4

Rural households in West Bengal report skipping at least one meal a day.

40%

Of food produced in West Bengal is wasted while families in the same district go without.

₹3000/mo

Is what a basic monthly ration kit costs — out of reach for landless labour families earning ₹4,000–6,000.

The Idea

Who we are

Village Food Support is not a charity or NGO. We are a volunteer team of friends, colleagues, and neighbours — mostly young working professionals from Kolkata, Howrah, and nearby districts of West Bengal.

Every month, each team member contributes what they can. We collect the money together, buy ration items at wholesale rates — rice, atta, dal, oil, sugar, salt, and more — pack them into kits, and personally deliver them to poor families in rural West Bengal.

The families we serve include landless labourers, widows with children, elderly couples with no income, and daily-wage workers who lost work during lean seasons.

Our vision

Simple — no family in our villages should sleep hungry. We want to grow our team, cover more villages, and inspire others in every district to do the same thing: pool money, buy ration, and distribute directly.

100% of what we collect goes into food. There is no office, no salaries, no middlemen. One team member maintains a simple expense sheet that everyone in the group can see.

Our Journey

On our first night of distribution in West Bengal, we realised that feeding 40 families once was not enough. Hunger in our villages needed a consistent answer — so we came back every month.
